Do you believe in angels ?
I first heard about Tori in 1992, when her Little Earthquakes
album got released, after i saw an interview of her in a french TV music show called
Rapido (hosted by Antoine de Caunes). I was under shock. I soon bougth the
album. I had never been so deeply touched by any music. And beeing a musician,
i listen to A LOT of music, and a wide range of music styles.
But this was very special. I found in Tori's music something which i craved
for, and for a long time. I was so special. Which is very difficult to
translate into words (add to that the fact that english isn't my mother
tongue...). It is hard to express, first because it is very personal, and also
only because it is a very complex feeling.
I often ask myself why i am so touched by her music. But i realised that at
the time i discovered Tori, it was a very tough time for me. It was when a lot
of changes happened. And Tori and her music were there, and never left me
since then.
Tori's music speaks for itself. At least to those that know how to listen.
With their hears and heart. Tori is one of those artist that people either
adore or hate. You don' t listen to Tori's music only to pass time. You listen
to it because you find yourself in itn and it touches you. It shows you your
inner self. And this is the utmost proof of respect to an artist work.
I think you can find this feeling, in the different Tori-Phile groups, and on
the #tori IRC channel (find me there under the SoulFish nickname), or in the
mailing-lists like Really-Deep-Thoughts.
As soon as i start to chat with people that share the same admiration as i do
toward Tori, i can sense that we feel the same things. Tori's like a link,
between cool, sensitive, and human(!) person.
Tori's Music
How to describe her music ? Well... it's tough. But it's a very simple and
pure music. Well, what if i talked about her a little first ?
Tori Amos (real name Myra Ellen Amos) was born on the 22nd of August 1963,
in Newton, North Carolina, USA. She spent most of her childhood in Baltimore.
She started playing the piano as soon as 2 and a half. She then got accepted
at the famous Peabody Conservatory Art School, at 5, which made her the
youngest person ever accepted there. She got 'fired' when whe was 11. She
didn't see things like the people there. She quicky became a fan of bands like
Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell...
At 21, she joined a heavy-metal band called Why Kant Tori Read whose
eponymous album got released in 1988, and wasn't quite a success.
I don't think it has even been released in France. By the way, if you can send
me a copy of the album it woul be sssoooooo cooooool (my birthday is on
the 8 of june, think about it) :-)
In 1992, she gets a contract with EastWest London. She releases her first
'solo' album that year. Her musis is simple, pure, emotional and filled with
emotions. Happy ones, or quite depressing ones (a song like 'Me and a gun'
can't leave you insensitive...). The emotional power of this music is so
string i get goose-bump just thinking about it. Songs like 'Winter',
'Precious Things', 'Chine' or 'Mother' are pure master-pieces.
As i was saying, Tori's music is very simple and pure. Nevertheless, her
knowledge about music allows her to use, her own way, a lots of complex and
tasty musical forms, from her knowledge of piano and classical music in
general.
So, her music get more powerful, and out-there, without all the clichés
we're used to hear on the radio or on MTV.
And her voice is so magically wonderful. So are her lyrics, both beautiful,
poetic, and metaphorical too... Thank u 4 everything. U kan't imagine what
you've done. you make us better persons u know...
Well, it's 'magnifique'. I love that.
